Primary Election
The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.

The primary election is held for members of the political parties to nominate candidates for the General Election. There are three political parties in Iowa: the Democratic Party, the Libertarian Party, and the Republican Party. Winners of the primary election will have their names automatically placed on the general election ballot.

Voter Registration

The voter pre-registration deadline is Monday, May 20 at 5 pm.

New registrants after the deadline, including on Election Day, will follow the Election Day Registration procedures. Proof of identity and proof of residence will be required.

Absentee Voting

By Mail: The first day we can begin accepting written applications/requests for absentee ballots is Tuesday, March 26. The first day that ballots will be mailed is Wednesday, May 15. The last day to request a mailed ballot is Monday, May 20, the original request must be received in the Auditor's Office by 5 pm that day. On the request form, mark "Primary" under type of election.

In-Person: Voting in the Auditor's Office begins Wednesday, May 15, and will be available during regular business hours until 4:30 pm, on Monday, June 3. The Auditor's Office will also be open for In-Person Absentee Voting on Saturday, June 1.

All absentee ballots must be received by 8:00 pm on Election Day to be considered on time to be counted.


Election Day Voting

The only way to vote on Election Day is by casting a vote at your assigned polling place.
