Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Building and Grounds Maintenance Technician
FLSA: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Job Summary:
The Building and Grounds Maintenance Technician reports to the Building and Grounds Maintenance Director. This position will provide care and maintenance of the building, grounds, and equipment of the Boone County Courthouse, Law Enforcement Center, Human Services Building, and the Boiler/Maintenance Building (Boone County Government Campus). This position is governed by the Boone County Employee Handbook and applicable federal and state laws.
WORK SHIFT
This is a non-exempt position meaning it is eligible for overtime. The Building and Grounds Maintenance Technician will work a minimum of a 20-hour work week. The schedule consists of Monday through Friday workdays with the occasional weekend. This schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the department. This position is subject to call-ins for emergencies and inclement weather.
JOB LOCATION
· Boone County Government Campus
· Some traveling is required to pick up parts and supplies, and to maintain educational requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Works alongside the Director to provide care for the buildings and grounds of the Boone County Government Campus. The Campus includes lawns, trees, sidewalks, parking lots, and flowerbeds.
· Conducts maintenance and care of the boiler.
· Responsible for snow and ice removal from Campus sidewalks, parking lots, and the freedom rock plaza.
· Assists with the maintenance and care of departmental equipment including, but not limited to: riding mower, truck, tools, ToolCat, snow blowers, weed eaters, chain saws, and other equipment.
· May provide cleaning of all buildings and grounds in the Boone County Government Campus at the direction of the County Auditor. This includes all areas in the buildings such as offices, restrooms, hallways and basement.
· Must wear a steel or composite toed boot while working.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
· Iowa Driver’s License.
· High School diploma or GED.
· Able to obtain boiler certification within the first year of employment.
· Mechanical aptitude.
· Ability to perform common custodial practices.
· Self-starter and internally motivated to perform the tasks needed with minimal direction and supervision.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the department.
· Must pass a criminal background check, medical examination, and drug testing.
PREFERRED SKILLS
· Ability to work on hot water circulation systems.
· Experience with fire monitoring systems and ability to change sprinkler heads as needed.
· Perform lighting upkeep, service and maintenance.
· Experience with the repair of institutional style plumbing fixtures.
· Door and door hardware repair and installation.
· Experience with building maintenance and safety practices.

Required physical activities/essential to the position:
Climbing stairs, balancing while walking on slippery surfaces, hiking over uneven terrain, stooping, kneeling, crouching, working in confined spaces, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, finger dexterity, grasping, work from platforms up to 20 foot above floor level, carry equipment and items, ability to move and lift furniture and equipment weighing between 60 and 80 lbs., climbing on 12 foot step ladders, able to work in prolonged inclement weather. Reasonable accommodation requests will be considered, if needed.
ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT
The following list is not exhaustive, but does represent the types of equipment that the department utilizes:
· Low pressure steam boiler.
· Lawn and garden tractor with mower and snow blade.
· Stationary emergency generator.
· Automotive vehicles and Bobcat Toolcat.
· Floor care equipment (wet vac, mopping etc.)
· Chain saw.
· Circular table saw.
· Power tools.
