This position will begin effective July 1st 

JOB OBJECTIVES:

1. Will be a regular employee of Boone County. Will be hired by the Board of 

Supervisors and work under the supervision of the Secondary Road Foreman.

2. Perform semi-skilled work and operate light to heavy equipment in maintaining, 

repairing and constructing County roads, right-of-ways and county drainage district 

facilities.

3. Will be governed by the applicable Boone

County Personnel Policies as approved by the Boone County Board of Supervisors.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Operate light to heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of County roads 

and right-of-ways in areas such as blading, drainage, ditching, resurfacing, 

patching, mowing, signs, driveways, culverts and bridges.

2. Operate equipment for snow removal, sanding, salting and plowing.

3. Function as a general laborer which includes:

a. Shoveling and spreading asphalt mix for patching work.

b. Cutting and clearing of brush and debris from road ditches.

c. Repairing of tile and tile intakes.

d. Erecting and replacement of road signs and barricades.

e. Performing various manual labor tasks involved in road, bridge and culvert  

maintenance, repair, and construction.

4. Additional duties as may be assigned by the Secondary Roads Foreman and 

County Engineer.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

1. On occasion perform routine maintenance on assigned equipment such as change 

oil, lubrication/grease and change tires.

2. On occasion assist the trained mechanic with major equipment maintenance or 

repair.

3. Function as a checker/ticket taker to weigh and/or inspect loads of rock, sand, 

asphalt mix and concrete.

3. Application of pesticides to brush and weeds in the County right-of-way.

4. Ability to establish effective working relationships with assigned co-workers, supervisor, and the public.

5. Ability to safely perform a wide range of physical tasks, including walking on uneven ground; standing; lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling amounts weighing up to 75 pounds, bending, kneeling and balancing.

6. Ability to safely work under conditions involving exposure to extreme temperatures, odors, toxic agents, smoke, noise vibrations, moving machinery, dirt and dust.

JOB STANDARDS:

1. Communicate on both telephone and FM radio.

2. Drive vehicles (Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes).

3. Operate construction and maintenance equipment.

4. Perform heavy manual labor (lifting up to 100 pounds) under all types of weather 

conditions.

5. Be available for emergencies 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

6. Effectively communicate with the residents of Boone County.

JOB LOCATION:

1. This position may be based at any of the three (3) secondary road maintenance 

facilities. Each employee typically reports to the same location each day, however the Engineer and/or Foreman have the ability to change the reporting location for this position at any time.

15. Other similar equipment as may be assigned.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE:

Minimum

1. Graduation from high school or GED Equivalent and one (1) year of experience in  

operating light or medium equipment such as single axle dump truck.

2. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes.

3. Must within 6 months of start of employment be able to obtain a valid Type-6 

Pesticide Applicator’s License.

Desirable

1. Knowledge of automotive and construction equipment usage, maintenance and 

repair.

2. Knowledge of principles and practices used in the maintenance, repairing and 

construction County roads, right-of-ways and drainage district facilities.

3. Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques used in construction and 

maintenance activities.
